Automotive Service Technicians in Great Demand

Service Technicians maintain, diagnose and repair all types of passenger vehicles. Today’s vehicles are extremely complex, run by multiple electronics and computers. Automotive Service Technicians do updates to control units, diagnosing and repairing water leaks, replacing or overhauling transmissions and engines, repairing heating and air-conditioning systems, performing safety recalls, diagnosing and repairing wiring problems, and much more.

Additionally, today’s technicians need to have good communication skills to interact with customers and properly explain repairs. Dealer technicians constantly continue to study online and visit training centers regularly. Many also are required to maintain ASE certification.

Curriculum

Moore Tech’s Automotive Service Technology program is a two-year program that teaches students everything necessary for employment as a technician at any GMADA member new car dealership. It also allows technicians to expand their knowledge and training using the latest technology while earning an Associate Degree. Auto body and paint are not part of this program.

Each student takes one automotive class (12 credit- hours each) and one general education class (3 credit-hours each) every term until the last term. Students begin a co-op position at GMADA member new car dealerships starting the third term. The last term is a full-time internship (12 credit-hours) at a GMADA member new car dealership. A total of six automotive classes and five general education classes are required for an Associate Degree (87 credit-hours total).

Students in this program must:

  • Have a valid driver’s license and a driving record to specific standards.
  • Pass a background check, insurance requirements, drug tests and other specific requirements of the dealership.
  • Maintain employment at a GMADA member new car dealership beginning the third trimester.

Course Descriptions

Automotive Service Technician Basics (AUTO-101)
Dealership job roles, shop safety, vehicle lifting, multi point inspections, electronic repair orders, checking for recalls and service information, electricity, controller area networks, using service information, supplemental restraint systems.

Math for Technicians (GE-105)
Secondary math review, fractions, decimals, conversions, measurements, averages, estimates, applying knowledge to everyday situations.

Maintenance, Brakes and Suspension (AUTO-102)
Oil and filter changes, resetting indicators, fluid drain and fill, fluid flushes, brake hydraulic principles, brake system parts and service, antilock and stability assist, suspension system parts and service, wheel and tire service, wheel alignment.

Technical Writing (GE-103)
Choosing the right words for the situation, correct tone, email etiquette, efficient communication, collecting and analyzing data, writing proposals, developing reports.

Internal Engine, HVAC and Cooling System (AUTO-103)
Engine configurations, designs, materials and construction; engine block and head disassembly, inspection and reassembly; timing components, gaskets, seals, fasteners, cooling system, heating and air conditioning system.

Introduction to Computer Science (GE-107)
Computer system technologies, Windows-based operating systems; creating, storing and sharing files; Word, Excel, and other software as needed; efficient use of programs

Automotive Transmissions and Drive Trains (AUTO-201)
Clutches, gear ratios, manual gear boxes, shift linkage, 4wd/awd transfer units, propeller shafts, drive axle assemblies, c.v. axles, automated manual units, automatic transmissions/transaxles, c.v.t. units; disassembly, inspection and reassembly of manual and automatic transmissions.

Technical Physics (GE-104)
Force, resistance and work in mechanical systems; force, resistance and work in electrical systems; electrical and magnetic fields, efficiency of these systems; velocity, speed and time.

Engine Performance and Advanced Automotive Systems (AUTO-202)
Delivery of air and fuel, fuel types, forced induction, variable timing operation, cylinder de-activation systems, vehicle drivability, driver assistance system performance and service, infotainment systems and apps.

Psychology (GE-106)
The science of psychology, neuroscience, sensation and perception, learning, memory, thinking and intelligence, personal theories, social psychology, abnormal psychology.

Professional Full-Time Internship (AUTO-203)
Students work at a new-car dealership at least 40 hours each week for at least 14 weeks. Employer feedback will result in a numeric grade. Students must maintain at least a C average to pass this class.
